Purple Drank is a mixture of a prescription cold medication containing promethazine (an antihistamine) and codeine with a soda drink along with ice and some sort of hard candy like Skittles to add color and taste. These ingredients combined make a purple liquid that is then sipped until euphoria and dissociation from one’s body occur. These effects will last between three and six hours. This mixture also goes by the street name of “Sizzurp”.

Because codeine is an opiate, it can be highly addictive if abused. Side effects of purple drank abuse include:

• drowsiness
• slower heart rate
• slurred speech
• seizure
• lack of coordination
• Constricted pupils that do not respond well to light
