Forensics Analysis Requests

There are individual requirements and procedures for analysis requests under each respective unit. The specific information for each type of request is listed under each of the sections below. Please review before initiating a new request for analysis.

Chemistry Unit

For submission of unknown powders, tablets, liquids, and plant material.
Submission of evidence requires a memo from the State Attorney’s Office (SAO) which is sent after charges are filed.
A positive field test is sufficient for search and arrest warrants and to file with the SAO.
For cases with an SAO memo, the items with the two highest charges will be accepted.
If the case does not have a field test due to suspected fentanyl (safety concerns) or an inconclusive field test, then the Chemistry Request Form may be e-mailed directly to the Chemistry Unit for approval. After approval, the evidence may be submitted to the lab.
The approved form will be submitted back via e-mail and must be submitted with the evidence.
All evidence should be placed in a sealed clear plastic evidence bag.
A detailed description of the appearance of the item (ex. color and form) and a weight or count should be included on the property receipt.
The SAO must evaluate all marijuana cases and the request must come from the SAO.

Crime Scene Unit

- Your processing request may be rejected if the method is within the scope of your ability.
- Narcotics must be separated from packaging prior to submitting requests.

Firearms Unit

A request must be submitted for all firearm analyses.
Submit a request vial e-mail (with Sgt. approval) to the contact below prior to bringing the evidence.
Submit evidence with a copy of the approval e-mail.
No additional forms are required.

Forensic Biology Unit

A DNA Request Form must be submitted for all case types.
The request form is found at /dnarequest/.
Non-PBSO agency representatives can request a login and password from dnarequest@pbso.org.
Per the Case Acceptance Policy (Located within the Crime Laboratory Manuals) the following may be submitted for first-round analysis:
- Up to 9 items for homicides
- Sexual Assault Kit for sexual assault cases
- Up to 4 items for other violent crimes
- 1 item for property crime cases
Victim, elimination and suspect standards must accompany the evidence.

Toxicology Unit

For submission of DUI (driving under the influence) cases, DUID (driving under the influence of drugs) cases and DFSA (drug-facilitated sexual assault) cases.
No pre-approval is required.
Toxicology Analysis Request Form must accompany the evidence.
