CORRECTIONS SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM

The Corrections Special Response Team provides enhanced security for the Main Detention Center.  This team of specially trained deputiesCorrections Special  Response Team provides in-cell checks for prohibited items or contraband.  The team also provides personalized security for high profile and high-rank inmates. The team size increased from three members to five members during 1998.

 

LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM

The Life Skills Program was introduced to inmates in 1998. Directed by the Chaplain's Office, religion based study is combined with practical and creative instructional techniques to provide inmates with the skills and knowledge needed to assist them to lead productive, crime-free lives following incarceration. Inmates are taught money management, job skills, grooming, and anger management skills. Members of the community and religious organizations proved cost-free instruction and serve as program Control Room Operatorsmentors.

 

CONTROL ROOM OPERATORS

Civilian personnel now operate control rooms within the Department of Corrections. Previously, deputies were assigned to perform these duties.  The conversion resulted in a cost savings of $536,990 in both salaries and benefits.

Several Department of Corrections' contracts were re-bid during 1998 to ensure greater service provision and cost effectiveness.  Two year contracts for inmate commissary, food service, and medical and mental health services were awarded to Canteen Corporation, Correctional Food Service Management and EMSA Correctional Care.

Live ScanLIVE SCAN

Live Scan, a new system installed in 1998 is an innovative technological method used to obtain and record fingerprints during the booking process. This system requires no ink or paper.  Fingerprints are scanned electronically, recorded and transferred for evaluation against local and state criminal records.

DRUG FARM

The Drug Farm, located on the grounds of the Stockade, is a structured, intensive therapeutic treatment program for substance abuser.  Managed by strict military discipline, the Drug Farm offers a supportive clinical setting conducive to promoting a personal process of recovery for each inmate.
