Visitation Schedule

The West Detention Center is located in Belle Glade, Florida, forty-five miles west of PBSO Headquarters in West Palm Beach. The West Detention Center houses all custody levels to include minimum, medium and maximum custody inmates. The facility was originally constructed and opened in 1983 with a bed capacity of 103 and was expanded in 1997 to its present capacity of 256 beds. The division operates as a "stand alone" facility, encompassing all aspects of a county detention facility including property, intake, booking and release, as well as classification, visitation and inmate housing.

The West Detention Center is currently undergoing a major expansion project that will bring the total facility capacity to 977. Completion of the expansion project is expected by late 2010 to early 2011. Among other features, the new facility will operate under the concept of direct supervision whereby corrections deputies will be stationed inside of the inmate housing units at a ratio of 64 inmates to one deputy. Video Visitation is another significant feature of the new facility that will allow visitors located in the western part of the county to visit any inmate at any Sheriff's Office correctional facility via live video feeds. Expansion of inmate programs and educational opportunities are part and parcel to the expansion of the facility.

Current West Detention Center staffing consists of seventy-two correctional professionals of various ranks and titles and is expected to increase to well over two-hundred and fifty staff members upon completion of the expansion project.
